I'll Still Be on Social Media Over Lent - Here's Why

I’m not giving up anything for lent….


Well – not anything edible anyway!


I’ll happily do the whole pancake thing because I love them (lemon and sugar please), but I’d rather pick up a new good habit than arbitrarily give something up.


I tend to choose something to do or learn. Not because I’m very spiritual, but because I’m not and there’s stuff I need to work on.


I’m going to be reading some bible notes that I hope will reconnect me afresh to the sacrifice of the Cross. I’ll also be keeping a gratitude journal – to help me be intentional about being thankful. (Note: The Works were selling the pictured gratitude journals for a reasonable price if you want one!)


This year I haven’t seen so many people saying they’re giving up social media over Lent  – and I’m very pleased about that.


I’m pleased for one main reason. I know a lot of people who are struggling with chronic illnesses and can’t leave their house. For them, social media is a lifeline. It is exactly what it says on the tin – Social media. And when a friend says “I’m giving up social media for Lent” it feels to them as though they are saying “I’m giving you up for Lent”.


Of course, that isn’t what they are saying, but when lots of people do this it can cut a person’s social network down considerably.


If you are one of those people wanting to look at how they spend their time on social media over Lent, can I humbly suggest a few things that may help you?


1.  When you log on in a morning or evening, pray for the first 3 people in your news feed.
2.  Post about something you are thankful for – not in a ‘this is my lent project – ‘get me’ being all thankful’ sort of way. Don’t tell anyone it’s about Lent - just a give a short commentary about a good thing that happened. Maybe even thank some one publicly and specifically for something they’ve done.
3.  If you have a friend who has a chronic illness, or relies on social media to keep in contact with the world, why don’t you message them and ask them how they are and what they need prayer for.

 

Warning - this may become habit forming – which is great! Don’t let the coming of Easter stop you continuing.
